This Saturday, while resting on our back patio with a slight stomach malaise and soaking in the welcome warmth of the sunshine, I found Jeff’s Potty Train Your Passion Challenge. Just moments before, I had been reading his new book, The Art of Work: A Proven Path to Discovering What You Were Meant to Do, and I was compelled to forge ahead with a dream I was holding back on. I took a couple of first steps, discovered his challenge, and went all in.
So, what exactly was this oddly named challenge? Basically, those who signed up committed to master a new skill and get paid for it in 48 hours. Technically, I had already started a WordPress blog prior to this weekend, and my new self-hosted one was purchased and set up, with corresponding Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest accounts (still unknown to anyone). However, I had yet to hit “Publish” on a first post, and I certainly hadn’t tried to make any money from it.
That all changed on Saturday. I wrote my post “Finding My Way with Writing,” hit “Publish,” shared my Facebook page with my friends (I also personally invited nearly all the women on my FB friend list), tweeted something (a first for me), and applied for an AdSense account (I was not approved- insuffucient content). By the end of the weekend, I had over 20 likes and two shares on Facebook with several more views to my pages. Then, as a result of my post, I also made a sale! On Sunday night, an old friend hired me to proofread her blog.
I look back at last weekend and think, Did I really just complete that challenge? Sure, I was all in to finally make my dream, Whispers of Worth, a reality, but I didn’t expect to receive such a positive response and monetary gain; those were an afterthought.
As of today, I have 38 likes and 104 views through Facebook. I am incredibly grateful to Jeff Goins for encouraging his followers to be brave and step out into those unknown spaces of our lives and make our dreams and passions a reality. I encourage any of you who have a dream in your heart, or even just a sense that there is something more out there for you, to check out his blog, Goins, Writer, or his Facebook page, Jeff Goins, Writer, and be sure to get your hands on his highly rated book, The Art of Work: A Proven Path to Discovering What You Were Meant to Do. It’s changing lives; I know it has changed mine.
What is that hidden passion you’ve been hiding away (from)? Take the first step and share it here, so we can encourage you in the pursuit of it. For me, Whispers of Worth became real one fall evening in 2013, when I met with four friends for dinner. We hadn’t all been together in years, so we had a lot to catch up on. I took a chance and shared my dream with Maureen, Becky, Kelly, and Heather. Their enthusiastic, supportive response has stuck with me all this time, knowing that they knew my dream and believed in it with me.
I owned the domain name for a year before I purchased my blog last fall, but that night was the catalyst for me to not give up on my dream. When I needed to create my logo, I called Maureen, and she came over. We spent a morning together getting it just right and catching up with each other again, while our children played happily in the other room. Had I not shared my dream with her that night, I would never have presumed to call her, but I knew that she knew my dream and would support me in it when the time came.
It’s been nearly a year and a half since that fateful dinner, but I didn’t give up. I’m here, Whispers of Worth is real, and you are sharing the journey and the dream with me just by reading this. Thank you!
I’d love to be a part of your dream, too. Share it below and know that you have a friend out there, cheering you on and believing with you.
